E3 Coverage: Best Game

The Annual E3 Awards: 2005
With each passing year, the Electronic Entertainment Expo gets bigger, brighter, louder, and crazier. The hype and hooplah reached a frenzied pitch in 2005 thanks to the unveiling of the next-generation of console systems: The Playstation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Revolution. But as always, it was the games themselves that drew us once more into the breach. You'll be pleased to note that the majority of our 'Top 25 Games of E3' this year are announced for systems that are available now -- you won't have to wait until the next generation to get your hands on some of these beauties. While there weren't a lot of head-and-shoulders-above standout products this year, the expo featured a ton of really strong titles. Read on for our take on the best of the best from the world's largest gaming convention!

1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN) The Wind Waker was a great addition to the Zelda franchise. Whether you cared for the cartoony graphics or not, the game stood firm on its own. Nintendo's Twilight Princess is another departure in the graphical look and feel of the game placing Link in a grittier, adult-feeling world. Darker and more foreboding, Link's new GameCube jaunt sees him transform into a wolf to engage in more of that classic, dungeon-hacking action we've all come to love. There wasn't really anything at the show this year that could knock The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess from our most-wanted list, proving once again that Nintendo really knows how to please its audience. Bryn: My personal choice for game of the show is none other than Nintendo's latest installment of The Legend of Zelda for the GameCube. I don't care if it seems like a safe, boring choice. There are very few games that can keep a franchise alive with the same level of magic like Zelda does. And Twilight Princess looks all set to do just that.
Given the hectic nature of the E3 show floor, it's very important to get as much hands-on time with the big games as possible in order to formulate a valid opinion. After playing through the entire four-level demo of Twilight Princess, I can honestly say that only two or three other console games at E3 2005 came close to getting me as pumped as Link's latest did. The graphics are looking amazing, and it's already apparent to me -- after sitting in on the Nintendo roundtable session -- that Twilight Princess will bring some great new gameplay elements to the table. An intriguing, wolf-transforming storyline should serve to take the Zelda franchise to new places. The four levels on show detailed new moves, weapons, and characters, as well as one boss fight, some excellent open-ended horseback combat, and a truncated dungeon hack. It's all in there. The components for another stellar Zelda are in place. All we need now is more time with the full game. It seems like fall is such a long way away right now. Great characters, storytelling, action, puzzles ... it was all here. Nintendo's Revolution may not have impressed people, but Link was certainly the king of the show.

Well, the next generation of systems are coming pretty soon now. Nintendo's new system has been nicknamed the Dolphin Project. There are many names that have been going around that people say is the new name. Such as; Star Cube and Nintendo 2000. But still the most likely name is Dolphin.
The new system is supose to be unveiled at Nintendo's Space World on August 25th. The system is also suppose to be available this Holiday season (2000).

Nintendo Revolution

Nintendo's Revolution Is About to BeginGDC 2005 sees Nintendo's Satoru Iwata reveal new info on Revolution, DS Wi-Fi services, and Zelda.

Conference in San Francisco, Nintendo held a press keynote which revealed the first real specifics about the company's new next-gen system -- codenamed "Revolution" -- along with new information about the future of the Nintendo DS' Wi-Fi multiplayer services. In the crowded grand ballroom of the Moscone center, Iwata addressed the crowd regarding the future vision for the company. He began to talk about his past experiences in game development from his initial passion for making and programming games, to the inception of his first company -- HAL Laboratories -- and ultimately, his rise to the very top of Nintendo as president.
He spoke of what he believes had changed over the last 20 years of video-game creation and understanding, and concluded that the future can only be forged successfully through the combination of famous franchises, innovative and emotional response-inducing games. He reiterated that it is still software that drives the sales of hardware, so by this token, the games are the most important aspect of the industry. He went on to comment on that those franchises which are the most-loved and successful are those which are truly original. The likes of
Spider-Man 2 and Madden are based upon intellectual properties that previously existed before their digital game incarnations, so the real focus for Nintendo will be to keep its strongest franchises -- e.g. The Legend of Zelda, Mario and Pokemon -- at the forefront of future gaming experiences. During his speech, it became apparent that Nintendo's vision for the future relies on constantly innovating the design and creation process. Using a set of software standards that Iwata referred to as "the four I's," -- innovate, intuition, interface, and inviting -- he went on to say that these are the words that Nintendo as a company lives by. Shifting gears up a notch, Iwata proceeded to talk about the Nintendo DS and how its Wi-Fi capabilities are going to be real next big focus for the platform. Bringing gamers together around the world via its seamless and completely free Wi-Fi service (using its own proprietary common API, which requires no SSID or WEP key to initiate -- seems to be the mantra here, reflected in a large number of the upcoming DS titles.
