Nintendo Revolution
Nintendo's Revolution Is About to BeginGDC 2005 sees Nintendo's Satoru Iwata reveal new info on Revolution, DS Wi-Fi services, and Zelda.
Conference in San Francisco, Nintendo held a press keynote which revealed the first real specifics about the company's new next-gen system -- codenamed "Revolution" -- along with new information about the future of the Nintendo DS' Wi-Fi multiplayer services. In the crowded grand ballroom of the Moscone center, Iwata addressed the crowd regarding the future vision for the company. He began to talk about his past experiences in game development from his initial passion for making and programming games, to the inception of his first company -- HAL Laboratories -- and ultimately, his rise to the very top of Nintendo as president.
He spoke of what he believes had changed over the last 20 years of video-game creation and understanding, and concluded that the future can only be forged successfully through the combination of famous franchises, innovative and emotional response-inducing games. He reiterated that it is still software that drives the sales of hardware, so by this token, the games are the most important aspect of the industry. He went on to comment on that those franchises which are the most-loved and successful are those which are truly original. The likes of Spider-Man 2 and Madden are based upon intellectual properties that previously existed before their digital game incarnations, so the real focus for Nintendo will be to keep its strongest franchises -- e.g. The Legend of Zelda, Mario and Pokemon -- at the forefront of future gaming experiences. During his speech, it became apparent that Nintendo's vision for the future relies on constantly innovating the design and creation process. Using a set of software standards that Iwata referred to as "the four I's," -- innovate, intuition, interface, and inviting -- he went on to say that these are the words that Nintendo as a company lives by. Shifting gears up a notch, Iwata proceeded to talk about the Nintendo DS and how its Wi-Fi capabilities are going to be real next big focus for the platform. Bringing gamers together around the world via its seamless and completely free Wi-Fi service (using its own proprietary common API, which requires no SSID or WEP key to initiate -- seems to be the mantra here, reflected in a large number of the upcoming DS titles.
